3 Things To Do Before You Talk With Your Child

The most important parenting moment often happens before the first sentence leaves your mouth.

When a child is upset, the adult nervous system becomes the room’s weather. If you enter the conversation already sharp, tired, or defensive, the child usually responds to that state before they respond to your words.

Before you talk, do three things. First, slow your breathing so your body is not leading with threat. Second, name what you think your child may be feeling. Third, decide whether this moment needs teaching, comfort, or a boundary.

That pause does not make you weak. It gives your brain enough space to parent from intention instead of reaction.
